Membership with the Irish Counselling, Psychotherapy & Allied Healthcare Professionals' Association (ICPHAA)

The Irish Counselling, Psychotherapy & Allied Healthcare Professionals' Association (ICPHAA) is an accrediting body for practitioners working in Ireland and internationally. We currently represent 958 active members drawn from a broad range of disciplines, including counsellors, psychotherapists, medical doctors, social workers, psychologists, and many other allied healthcare professionals. Our purpose is to uphold rigorous professional standards, support ongoing development, and provide members with recognised, verifiable credentials that reflect their training, experience, and ethical commitment to safe and competent practice. Membership of ICPHAA places a practitioner within a respected professional community and offers a clear, structured route through the stages of a career, from initial training to advanced practice and supervision.

ICPHAA offers four membership categories, each designed to recognise a practitioner's stage of professional development.

Student Members: This category is open to individuals currently enrolled on a recognised programme of training in counselling, psychotherapy, or an allied healthcare field. Student membership provides early access to the professional community, supports reflective learning, and helps trainees become familiar with the ethical and practice standards they will be expected to uphold once qualified.

Pre-Accredited Members: Pre-accredited membership is intended for practitioners who have completed, or are nearing completion of, their core training and are working towards full accreditation. This stage recognises practitioners who are accumulating supervised practice hours and consolidating their competence under appropriate oversight, thereby offering a supported pathway towards full accreditation.

Accredited Members: Accredited membership is awarded to practitioners who have met the Association's full requirements for qualification, supervised practice, and continuing professional development. It signals to clients, employers, and regulators that the member practises to a recognised professional standard and adheres to the ICPHAA Code of Ethics.

Supervisors: This category recognises experienced accredited practitioners who have undertaken further training in clinical supervision. Supervisor membership acknowledges the additional responsibility of supporting and safeguarding the practice of other professionals, ensuring quality, accountability, and ethical oversight across the field.

Applications for all categories are made on this page. Applicants are asked to provide details of their qualifications, training, supervised practice, and current professional indemnity arrangements where relevant. Each application is assessed against the criteria for the relevant category, and the Association is committed to a fair, transparent, and inclusive process that welcomes practitioners from all backgrounds and disciplines.

All four membership categories — student, pre-accredited, accredited, and supervisor — share a common set of benefits. Every member is eligible for inclusion in the Association's online directory of practitioners, which helps prospective clients, employers, and referrers find verified professionals. Each member also receives a certificate of accreditation corresponding to their exact accreditation category and type, along with an official accredited logo for use on websites and marketing materials, enabling members to display their professional standing with confidence. These benefits give members visibility, credibility, and a tangible mark of recognition that supports their practice and reassures the people they work with.

Across every category, ICPHAA places continuing professional development, supervision, and adherence to its Code of Ethics at the heart of membership. Members are encouraged to engage in reflective practice, maintain appropriate supervision arrangements, and keep their knowledge and skills current, ensuring that the public can have confidence in the standard of care they receive. The Association also provides members with guidance, resources, and a recognised point of professional reference, helping practitioners to navigate ethical questions and safeguarding responsibilities with assurance.

Certificates and verifiable issuing via POK on the blockchain

Every ICPHAA certificate is issued as a verifiable digital credential on the blockchain through our partnership with POK (Proof of Knowledge), a globally recognised platform trusted by more than 1,100 universities, governments, and professional bodies across 19 countries. Each member's accreditation becomes not simply a printed document but a secure, future-proof record that can be confirmed anywhere in the world.

POK is ISO 27001 and SOC 2 certified, 1EdTech certified, and fully compliant with international standards including Open Badges 3.0, W3C Verifiable Credentials, and the European Learning Model (Europass). Each credential is issued as a unique, tamper-proof NFT on the Polygon and LacNet public blockchains, cryptographically secured and instantly verifiable by employers, clients, regulators, and educational institutions worldwide with a single click.

For members, this carries real practical value. Credentials cannot be forged, lost, or falsely claimed; they can be shared instantly via a secure link or QR code, added to professional profiles, and verified by any third party without contacting the Association. For the public, it offers reassurance that an ICPHAA practitioner's accreditation is authentic, up to date, and independently verifiable, strengthening trust across the profession.
