For the Public

The Irish Counselling & Psychotherapy Association (ICPA) exists to protect and support members of the public who seek counselling and psychotherapy services. Choosing a therapist can feel daunting, especially at times of stress or vulnerability. The ICPA aims to make this process clearer, safer, and more transparent.

One of the first supports available to the public is telephone and online support, where individuals can receive guidance on how to access appropriate services or understand what counselling and psychotherapy involve. While this is not a substitute for therapy, it can be a helpful first step when deciding what kind of support you may need.

A key resource is the ICPA online register. Members listed on this register have met the Association's standards for training, ethics, and ongoing professional development. Before beginning therapy, the public is encouraged to find a therapist through this register and to verify practitioner credentials. All member qualifications and levels of accreditation are fully checked and verified against recognised Irish, UK, and EU standards, providing added reassurance of professional competence and compliance.

Transparency and accountability are central to public protection. The ICPA provides a clear complaints procedure for situations where concerns arise about a practitioner's conduct or professional standards. Information on how to make a complaint is publicly available and outlines each step of the process, ensuring fairness, independence, and due process for both clients and practitioners.

In addition, the Association publishes relevant company registration details, governance information, and organisational policies so that the public can clearly understand how the ICPA operates, how standards are upheld, and how professional oversight is maintained.

By offering accessible information, verified registers, qualification checks, and clear pathways for support and complaints, the Irish Counselling & Psychotherapy Association helps the public make informed choices, promotes safe and ethical practice, and strengthens trust in counselling and psychotherapy services across Ireland.
